Brit Spotting Round-up 5/10

May 10, 2012

HOWDY IDRIS!

Picture
We always love talking about Idris at BATP and it’s not hard when he’s constantly making the headlines. Always willing to take on something fresh and exciting the British actor is set to star in a black western short film called They Die By Dawn.

The project is the brainchild of Jeymes Samuel, the frontman for UK hip  hop collective The Bullits and the impressive cast is said to include Rosario Dawson and Michael K. Williams.

According to Samuel the film is “set in 1890 with every single black actor in Hollywood swagged out, cowboy style.”

If Westerns aren’t your cup of tea maybe Elba’s next UK project is more up your alley. Word is he’s being lined up to front a second Fresh One Productions film, looking at the history of dance music and clubbing for the UK’s Channel 4. Surely he's got one of the most diverse acting resumes in the business.

UK BEIBERS

Two UK boy wonders are helping to propel the British music invasion in the US.
21-year-old Ed Sheeran has already conquered the British charts and is currently touring the US with Snow Patrol.

Although he disappointed some new American fans this week by announcing he’ll have to miss the last few days of the tour the singer-songwriter promised to return to the US on his own tour next month.

And the busy performer has also been confirmed as one of the headline acts for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert taking place at the beginning of June.

Connor Maynard, who’s being called the UK’s Justin Beiber because he was discovered via Youtube, has been working with Pharrell Williams and Ne-Yo on his debut album, Contrast.

His label, EMI Music UK, are focused on breaking Maynard on a global level and turning his massive online popularity (the kid already has 190,000 Twitter followers!) into hardcore sales.

Check out Connor's debut single Can't Say No, which has already reached No.2 on the UK pop charts:

Leona vs Kanye

Picture
It seems Kanye’s having a spot of bother with his latest tune.

First he had to rename the song Way Too Cold after the original name Theraflu raised objections from the makers of the cold and flu medicine and now he’s upsetting people like Brit singer Leona Lewis, who’s not very impressed with some of the lyrics.

The 27-year-old songstress, who is an avid supporter of animal rights group PETA, tweeted;
"Heard that awful Kanye West song talking about minx dragging on the floor. What an awful thing to be proud of! I take all my love for him back!"

PETA has also issued a statement saying, "What's dragging on the floor is Kanye's reputation as a man with no empathy for animals or human beings. He is a great musician but does not seem to have the fashion sense to design anything more than caveman costumes."

Despite tweets of support from Leona’s fans, Kanye hasn’t responded to her comments.

A Lewis/West battle isn’t something that excites us but it certainly won't do Leona's credibility any harm as she's currently gearing up for the release of Glassheart, her third studio album, due out this November

RIP VIDAL

Picture
Sad news about the passing of hairdresser and trendsetter Vidal Sasson, who died in
his home in LA on Wednesday at age 84.

The stylist has been living in America for over 20 years and leaves behind a legacy of revolutionary techniques, fashion trends and innovative products.

A true British icon.
