Brit Spotting Round-up 2/17

BRITS KEEPING IT REAL!

Picture

Remember the days when Daphne from ‘Frasier’ and ‘Murder She Wrote’s Jessica Fletcher were the only regular British accents you heard on US TV? Well English culture and lifestyle seems to be more popular than ever in America with a slew of reality show based on UK subjects popping up all over the place:

Made In Chelsea

The Style Network started airing this British version of ‘The Hills’ in November. The show follows a group of London's elite twenty-something’s as they make-up, break-up, shop and ski. Suprisingly the posh reality show with little drama but lots of fake tan is still going strong.

The Wanted

It was only a matter of time before this one was announced. ‘The Wanted Life’ (working title) will document the personal and professional lives of the British group that’s stormed the US charts as they shack up in the Hollywood Hills. Produced by Ryan Seacrest the show is set to make its debut in the US in June.

Chasing the Saturdays

Not sure who’s doing the chasing but the E! Network premiered this ‘follow the band’ reality show a few weeks ago, chronicling the lows and not-so-highs of British-Irish girl group ‘The Saturdays’, who’ve also ‘written’ a book and started their own line of clothing, jewellery and nail polish! It’s clearly a great promotional tool to gain interest for the group’s music (which you hardly hear on the show). And surprisingly the show has only just started airing in the UK. Check out their post-show:

EMINEM HELPS BRIT

Picture
It’s always nice when a little known Brit gets some worldwide exposure - this time it’s courtesy of Eminem who has sampled British artist Jamie N Commons on his next single. The rapper used a section of the singer's vocals on a track he’s expected to release as his big comeback this summer. Expect to hear more about Jamie when the single drops!

US STARS TALK UK

Picture
It seems everyone has an opinion about British culture  - whether they’ve experienced it for themselves or not.

Quentin Tarrantino’s been talking to ‘The Sun’ newspaper in the UK about why he didn’t even consider actor Idris Elba for the ‘Djanjo Unchained’ movie; “Idris is British and this is an American story. I think a problem with a lot of movies that deal with this issue is they cast British actors to play the Southerners and it goes a long way to distancing the movie. They put on their gargoyle masks and they do their phoney accents and you are not telling an American story any more.”

Bruce Willis, on the other hand, is a little more complimentary of British talent. The ‘Die Hard’ star told ‘The Sun’ newspaper “There are new action stars - I think Jason Statham is one. He's really good and Daniel Craig is a pretty tough guy. He reinvented that whole genre. He made me start watching James Bond movies again.”

Meanwhile Justin Bieber’s been sharing his opinion on British girls, telling ‘Fabulous Magazine’ they have dirtier mouths over here. “Things are accepted in the UK that wouldn’t be accepted in the US.” he revealed. “It’s more free in the UK. You guys are more open-minded so the way you approach me is different.”
Could a British girlfriend be in his future?
