Brit Spotting Round-up 4/4

April 4th, 2013

GOSSIP GIRL!

Picture
Whether or not we can handle another all-female reality show, VH1 are giving us one. Gossip Game premiered on the channel this week - a gritty, real and no holds barred look at seven females in the hip hop reporting game.

Among the list is British journalist and presenter, Sharon Carpenter. Best known for her work on BET News and BBC World News, Sharon is now a reporter for Global Grind and co-creator of the new show VH1that airs Monday nights.

Viewers got a small glimpse into Sharon's background on the first episode when she revealed she faced racism daily in the UK and how hip hop helped her get through that. She also admitted she's consistently had to prove herself as a serious journalist because of her looks.

No one can deny being a female in the media business is tough, let alone the male-dominated world of hip hop.
We're just glad that among the on-the-grind bloggers and radio personalities featured on the show Sharon's holding it down for qualified media professionals and Brits everywhere!

Harry Coming to America!

Picture
Prince Harry is stepping across the pond again, the first time since his scandalous Las Vegas trip last year.

His charity visit to the US next month will include a trip to the Warrior games in Colorado Springs, where
injured servicemen and women compete in Paralympic-style competitions and a British team will take part for the first time.

As well as playing Polo in Connecticut and attending a baseball game in New York (all in the name of supporting a good cause of course) the Prince will also visit areas affected by Hurricane Sandy and possibly meet President Obama and the first lady.

Let's hope he doesn't bump into someone else who'll be in Washington at the same time - Taylor Swift.

Apparently the singer has been trying to meet Harry for a while. The Sun newspaper reports; 'she's desperate to get her name added on to the VIP lists of stars being lined up to meet Harry.' We predict another naked photo in the works!

Brit TV on PBS

Picture
If you're having Downtown Abbey withdrawal symptoms fear not, PBS have lined up two new Brit shows to quench your thirst for period dramas.

Call the Midwives returned for a second season this week. Based in London's East end during the 50's the show follows Poplar’s community of exceptional midwives and nursing nuns.

Although season one wasn't a huge success expect to see more births, cockney accents and references to the British National Health system this time around.

Maybe the station's newest Brit drama will appeal more to US fans. It focuses on Harry Gordon Selfridge, the American business tycoon who opened the London department store - Selfridges -  in Oxford Street in 1909.  Jeremy Piven plays the flamboyant role of the man who American press have described as 'revolutionizing British retail'. Sex, shopping and drama - sounds like the perfect mix for a hit show!

Call the Midwives and Mr. Selfridge both air on Sundays on PBS. Check your local listings for times.
